Library Services & Policies: Circulation Policies

Community Lending

Alumni

Documented alumni (graduates of the college) who live within a 60 mile radius of Annapolis may be granted library borrowing privileges without a membership fee. Upon presentation of identification and completion of the alumni borrower agreement (available at the circulation desk), qualifying individuals will be issued a card that must be presented each time books are checked out.

Lending: Up to five books and lectures may be borrowed concurrently, for a loan period of 30 days; up to five audio materials can be checked out for 2 weeks; and up to five video materials can be checked out for one week. Interlibrary loan services are not available for alumni borrowers.

Renewals: Alumni wishing to renew materials can either bring items to the Library for renewal or renew materials online through the Library’s catalog. Items can be renewed once online. The Library does not accept renewals by phone or email.

Recalls: Books requested by another patron must be returned within one week of notification. Notices will be sent through the mail, so please be sure your address is current with the library. Alumni cannot request items from other patrons.

Lost Fees The library does not charge overdue fees for items. If an item becomes more than three weeks overdue, it will be considered lost and replacement charges will apply. If patrons find library materials that were lost and return the materials to the library, we will gladly refund the replacement cost, minus the $10 processing fee for materials returned within 90 days. Failure to return materials in a timely fashion may result in borrowing privileges being withdrawn.

For more information on any of these policies, please contact John Jewitt, Public Services Librarian, at john.jewitt@sjc.edu or 443-482-6582, or Catherine Hines, Library Director at catherine.hines@sjc.edu or 410-626-2550.

Recalls

Current students, faculty and staff may make requests for materials that are currently checked out, with the exception of program titles and books used for laboratory and tutorial classes. Recall requests can be made by searching for the desired item in the online catalog, clicking on the title, then clicking on the "request copy" link to the right of the item's due date. Patrons then enter the number on their library card, enter any comments, and click on the "request" button to submit their recall request. The current borrower will then be notified that the item is recalled and will have seven days to return the material. Overdue fines for recalled items are $1/day to a maximum of $10 per item. Once a recalled item is returned, the requesting patron will receive notification that the item is available for check-out at the library’s Circulation desk.

Overdue Charges: The library does not charge current students, faculty, and staff overdue fines for library materials with the exception of recalled items. Recalled items, items requested by other patrons, that are not returned by the given due date are charged $1/day to a maximum of $10 per item. Overdue audio and video materials checked out to alumni are charged $1/day to a maximum of $10 per item.

Borrowers will receive several overdue notices and if material is not returned, within three weeks of its due date, it will be considered lost and lost processing fees and lost fees will apply (see below).

Lost Charges: Library materials are loaned to library users in trust that they will be returned promptly and in good condition. The library charges a flat rate for each category of material, plus a processing fee for the work involved in locating, ordering, and cataloging the replacements. The charges for each category are as follows:

  • Regular book - $50
  • (Bound) Periodical - $50
  • Unbound Periodical- $10
  • Lecture (print) - $10
  • CD - $30
  • DVD - $30
  • Faculty File, Prize Essay, and Reserves - $50
  • Vertical File - $10
  • Unusually expensive items will be individually assessed.

Library materials always remain the property of the college and must be returned whenever possible, no matter how much time has elapsed. If patrons find library materials that were lost and return the materials to the library within 90 days of the due date, we will refund the replacement cost, minus the $10 processing fee.

Pick-Up Requests

Library Pick-up

The Library accepts online item requests from SJC students, faculty, and staff.  Please submit requests for materials via the Library catalog.  The Library staff will retrieve requested materials and send an email message to your SJC email address. Please bring your SJC 1Card / Library card to check out requested items.

Requests are limited to 15 items per day. Library staff retrieve requested items two times per day. The most reliable way to ensure that you get the library materials you need is to visit the library to retrieve the material yourself.
